Proxmox VE 8.4 launches with VM live migration, NVIDIA vGPU support, new backup API & more
Proxmox Virtual Environment 8.4 has been launched with notable enhancements, including live migration capabilities for virtual machines using mediated devices like NVIDIA vGPU, provided the necessary hardware and driver support are in place. A new tool, pve-nvidia-vgpu-helper, has been introduced to simplify the setup of NVIDIA vGPU drivers. Additionally, an API for third-party backup solutions allows for the creation of integrated plugins for backup and restore operations. The update also includes support for Virtiofs directory passthrough, enabling direct file sharing between the host and virtual machines, although Windows guests require additional software for this feature.
The update is built on Debian 12.10 (“Bookworm”) with a default Linux kernel 6.8.12, with an option for Linux kernel 6.14. It incorporates updated open-source technologies such as QEMU 9.2.0, LXC 6.0.0, ZFS 2.2.7, and Ceph Squid 19.2.1. Other improvements include enhanced backup fleecing, a strengthened SDN stack, and expanded ISO installer options.
Proxmox VE 8.4 can be downloaded as an ISO for bare-metal installation, upgraded via apt, or installed on Debian. The platform remains open-source under the GNU Affero General Public License v3, with enterprise support services starting at EUR 115 per year and CPU.
