Pinterest will train AI models on user data and content, regardless of when it was posted
Pinterest, the popular social media platform known for visual discovery and inspiration, has announced an update to its privacy policy. This update highlights the company's intention to utilize user data and images for training generative AI models. A new clause specifies that user information will be used to “train, develop and improve our technology such as our machine learning models, regardless of when Pins were posted”, and to develop “features powered by generative artificial intelligence”.
This implies that any content shared on the platform since its inception in 2010 could be used in AI model training. Beyond images and videos, Pinterest also collects a variety of user data, including account details, precise location, contacts, device information, log data, and cookie information. This move aligns Pinterest with other major tech companies like Meta, Reddit, and Google, which also leverage user data for AI training purposes. The updated privacy policy is set to take effect on April 30, 2025.
