Perplexity introduces deep research for AI-driven research automation

Perplexity has launched Deep Research, a new feature to enable AI-driven research capabilities, keeping pace with recent tools with similar capabilities released by Gemini Advanced and ChatGPT Deep Research. This tool automates research, performing numerous searches and analyzing hundreds of sources in 1-2 minutes—a task that would take a human hours.

Deep Research employs an iterative approach, dynamically refining its search strategy by reading documents, extracting insights, and planning subsequent steps. It produces clear, comprehensive reports, which can be exported as PDFs or shared via Perplexity Pages. The feature has outperformed many AI models in industry benchmarks, achieving a 21.1% score on "Humanity’s Last Exam."

Accessible through Perplexity AI’s website, users can select Deep Research from the mode options before submitting queries. Deep Research operates on a customized version of Deepseek's R1 model, reducing costs significantly compared to competitors like OpenAI, with free users limited to five queries per day and Pro users accessing up to 500 daily for a $20 monthly fee. Currently web-exclusive, the tool will soon be available on iOS, Android, and Mac.
