Firefox 146 adds Wayland fractional scaling, Windows 10 backups, and EU weather widget

Firefox 146 introduces automatic daily local backups on Windows 10, letting users save passwords, bookmarks and other browser data directly on their device with optional password encryption. These backups can be restored on new or existing installations, and Mozilla says support for Linux and macOS will follow. Alongside this, macOS gains a dedicated GPU process that restarts independently when graphics components fail, reducing full browser crashes caused by WebGPU, WebGL or WebRender.

The release also delivers full fractional scaling support on Wayland by default. Firefox now reads GNOME and GTK screen metrics accurately, correcting issues where text, icons or menus appeared blurry or oversized at fractional scales like 125 or 150 percent. Previous inconsistencies, including oversized AI link previews, have been addressed, though Mozilla notes some rare edge cases may still appear.

Additional changes include the gradual rollout of the new tab weather widget in the European Union and select regions powered by sponsored AccuWeather data, broader access to Firefox Labs, more instant answers surfaced directly in the search bar, improved accessibility controls in Settings and the usual set of security fixes.
