X unveils encrypted chat with video calls & disappearing messages to replace legacy DMs

X has introduced a new encrypted chat feature, which replaces the previous direct messaging (DM) system. This update includes end-to-end encryption, video calling, file sharing, and privacy features like disappearing messages and screenshot notifications.

All messages, including links and media, are encrypted, ensuring that only the sender and recipient can read them. The new chat feature supports voice and video calls, file sharing, and disappearing messages. Users can also edit or delete messages after sending.

X's new encrypted chat feature aims to compete with other secure messaging platforms, including Signal, WhatsApp, Threema, Session, etc.

The encrypted chat feature is rolling out now on iOS and web, with support for Android coming soon. Users will just have to update the X app to access Chat and legacy DMs in one unified inbox.

Lot of buzzwords in the official announcement. The encryption is based on some "peer-to-peer blockchain method", a new kind of magic stuff supposed to be very secure.

Also, users seem to be able to be notified when someone takes a screenshot a private message or attachment, even there is not a single technology capable of that for the web.

Again, sticking to dull open-source apps that use standard boring encryption technologies is the only way to stay safe.

You can take picture of computer screen with your phone. Technology is defeated.
