Mozilla introduces AI Window in Firefox, putting users in control of AI browsing

Mozilla has introduced AI Window in Firefox, a feature that allows users to interact with an AI assistant directly within the browser. This space offers real-time help while browsing, but it is entirely under user control — participation is strictly opt-in, and the feature can be disabled at any time according to individual preference.

While Mozilla's move adds advanced capabilities to Firefox, it intentionally avoids locking users into a single AI ecosystem. Unlike some AI-driven browsers that require a permanent commitment to AI features, Firefox lets users decide when, how, or whether to use AI at all. This approach preserves flexibility and autonomy for the browser’s user base.

Building on Firefox’s established support for both customizable and private browsing, AI Window adds another layer of choice. Users may continue with classic or private modes as before, or enable the AI Window if they want a more interactive and personalized web experience.

Supporting this launch, Mozilla reiterates its commitment to transparency, accountability, and user agency — core principles aimed at maintaining a free, open, and accessible web as AI becomes more widely integrated into everyday browsing.

Let's keep in mind that this is still agentic browsing; it's very much prone to messing up every now and then, and it can still be vulnerable to prompt injection attacks. Thankfully this is optional, unlike in Perplexity Comet icon Perplexity Comet , ChatGPT Atlas icon ChatGPT Atlas , etc. so if you don't want AI doing the work for you in your browser, it's totally fine.

Opt-in AI models is the better choice than Edge or Chrome always on proprietary AI model. I am not Firefox fan, but I think they are right 100%. We will not be able to avoid AI completely. It is too useful to ignore on mandate tasks. Paraphrasing one channel I follow: "AI is like a very smart intern on his first work day. He is very eager researcher and summarizer. But he requires a constant double-checking because he does not know how things really work".

TBCNY dumped Arc Browser's unique interface to pursue an AI browser with bog-standard interface... little do they know that every browser is becoming an AI browser, even friggin Firefox is becoming an AI browser now.

What does any of that even mean?! Seriously, when are we getting the inevitable AI "ET for Atari 2600" that crashes the whole thing?

Wish mozilla would return to its roots and discard all the advertising and AI 'innovation'. Can't wait for new projects like Ladybird icon Ladybird to hopefully fulfill the void that Mozilla is creating by following in the footsteps of its biggest donor: google

This was not unexpected as Mozilla recieve GAFAM money, outsource Mozilla Firefox icon Mozilla Firefox into Proprietary Entrapment that is GitHub icon GitHub, pushing the defective you-own-nothing-and-be-happy apparatus, and contributing into the pile of i386 e-wastes.

This shows that Firefox has been enshittifed into an unjust proprietary malware, but thankfully we have alternatives (sic): GNU IceCat icon GNU IceCat LibreWolf icon LibreWolf Mullvad Browser icon Mullvad Browser Waterfox icon Waterfox Use those instead of Firefox from now on to avoid supporting proprietary enshittification.
