Flipboard's latest app, Surf, introduces TikTok-style video feeds amid TikTok ban debate

In response to the ongoing debate surrounding TikTok's potential ban in the U.S., several big companies have started offering alternatives to the popular Chinese app, including X and Bluesky, who have recently incorporated vertical video feeds into their platforms. Following suit, Flipboard has now introduced this TikTok-style feature to its latest app, Surf Social.

Described as a browser for the open social web, Surf enables users to discover, create, and share custom feeds with content aggregated from ActivityPub, the AT Protocol, and RSS feeds. The new video feed integrates content from Bluesky's "trending video" feed and posts tagged with #SkyTok. Flipboard aims to tailor the feed to align with users' preferences, enabling them to personalize their video feeds by pulling content from their Bluesky following timeline and filtering for video posts, offering a personalized experience by displaying videos from users they follow.

Its worth noting that currently, Surf is in an invite-only beta phase, and interested users can join a waitlist to gain access.

Surf Social allows users to create custom feeds by integrating content from platforms such as Bluesky, Mastodon, Threads, Flipboard, and YouTube. As a Mastodon client, it enables users to star sources and apply filters for personalized content curation. Notable alternatives include Tusky, Tuba, and Ice Cubes for Mastodon.
