GNOME 47 launched with custom accents, screencast improvements and better display handling

GNOME 47, codenamed “Denver,” has been released after six months of development. Users can now customize their GNOME interfaces with new accent colors in the Appearance settings. Display handling on lower-resolution screens has been improved with automatic scaling of icons and interface elements for better visibility.

A notable addition is the support for hardware encoding during screencasts on Intel and AMD GPUs, which reduces system strain and boosts performance. GTK rendering has been optimized for a more responsive experience on older hardware and mobile devices. Remote desktop sessions are now persistent, allowing users to resume work seamlessly. Dialog windows have been redesigned for better usability across various screen sizes, including narrow screens and mobile devices.

The updated file dialogs now integrate with the GNOME Files app, offering features like zoom, sort order changes, and file previewing. The Files app itself includes a new “Network” view for browsing remote locations, lists physical disks in the sidebar, and allows sidebar customization. Search functionality has been enhanced with contextual performance information. The Settings app has also seen updates, including new accessibility options, input source previewing in Keyboard settings, and optimized suspend options for mobile devices. Additionally, Online Accounts have been improved with features like automatic completion of IMAP/SMTP email details and Microsoft 365 Copilot integration. You can read even more changes in the official release notes here.
