Canva to increase team subscription prices by up to 300%, citing new AI features
Canva, the widely-used online graphic design platform, is set to significantly raise prices for some of its business subscriptions next year, citing the integration of generative AI features. The Teams subscription, which accommodates multiple users, will experience price hikes of up to 300% in certain regions. Canva justifies this increase by pointing to the enhanced product experience and value brought by its generative AI tools, such as the Magic Media text-to-image generator and Magic Expand background extension tool.
In the US, some Canva Teams users have reported that their subscriptions will rise from $120 per year for up to five users to $500 per year. However, a 40 percent discount will reduce this to $300 for the first 12 months. Subscribers were notified of the impending price changes via email late last week.
This move marks a significant shift for Canva, which was previously seen as a cost-effective alternative to Adobe's more expensive graphic design software. The price increases come on the heels of Canva's acquisition of the company behind the Affinity creative software suite.
Holy, 300% is the largest single subscription price increase I can recall - Twitch was like 60%.
This may be the true cost of AI. So why users should not pay all this cost if they want to use it? And it may not be enough, so why not also ask for all users to cover the cost? As soon as AI is embed into a product, it may be forever. But first, the cost is hidden, then the cost is always there. So better think twice about any product with AI.
