Microsoft to re-introduce Recall feature in October with an uninstall / opt-out option
Microsoft's Windows 11 controversial Recall feature, initially set to launch in June with Copilot+ PCs, is making a comeback in October. Recall, which takes snapshots of user activity for manual indexing and search, faced significant backlash over privacy concerns. In response, Microsoft retracted the feature, delaying its full release to address these issues.
In preparation for Recall's reintroduction, Microsoft has now provided an option to uninstall the feature entirely in Windows 11 version 24H2 for Copilot+ PCs. This change, implemented through KB5041865, allows users to disable Recall via the "optionalfeatures" menu by pressing Win + R and typing "optionalfeatures." Previously, users could only turn off Recall without removing it from their systems.
According to the company, the revamped Recall will feature a clearer onboarding experience and enhanced security measures to ensure that locally stored data is encrypted and accessible only to authorized users. Importantly, Recall will be strictly opt-in, being disabled by default.
