Google Meet for mobile gets a UI redesign, real-time chat, On-the-Go Mode & screen sharing
Google Meet is undergoing a major redesign for its Android and iOS apps, integrating the personal video calling features of Google Duo with its more advanced meeting capabilities. The updated app now boasts a streamlined interface with modernized pre-call screens and new call control buttons positioned at the bottom for easier access during calls.
The update introduces several new functionalities, including real-time text chat for link sharing and communication in situations where speaking isn't feasible. Screen sharing is also now available on both Android and iOS, enabling users to share photos, videos, presentations, and more during calls. Additionally, a new "On-the-Go" mode allows users to switch to audio-only mode when in motion, such as walking, driving, or using public transport. This mode activates via a countdown if no action is taken, and features large, easy-to-press buttons for essential controls like mute/unmute, hand raising, audio device/source selection, and ending the call.
Further enhancements include support for live captions in over 70 languages and new expressive features like emoji reactions, stacked filters, effects, and accessories. These updates are being rolled out gradually over the next few months, so it may take some time for them to become available to all users.
Oh look, an effeminate male couple of opposite races are talking to a lesbian-looking woman. Google is so wonderfully inclusive of everything besides the majority of humans.
