Netflix is notifying users about the end of its cheap ad-free plan, urging to upgrade
Netflix is discontinuing its most affordable ad-free plan, a change initially announced to investors earlier this year. Users subscribed to this tier are now receiving notifications informing them of the last day they can access the service unless they upgrade. One user shared a notification stating, "Your last day to watch Netflix is July 13th. Choose a new plan to keep watching."
The notifications have primarily been received by users in the UK and Canada, aligning with Netflix's previously announced timeline. These regions were slated to see the changes first before a broader rollout. Users can either upgrade to a more expensive ad-free plan or switch to an ad-supported tier to save money. The ad-supported plan costs $6.99 / £4.99 / 5.99€, while the standard ad-free plan (HD) costs $15.49 / £10.99 / 13.49€, and the premium ad-free plan (4K) costs $22.99 / £17.99 / 19.99€.
The company reported that the ad-supported plan now accounts for 40% of all new sign-ups in markets where ads are available. The basic plan will be retired in more ad-supported countries, starting with Canada and the UK in Q2, and then expanding to other regions as part of Netflix's broader strategy to shift more users towards its ad-supported plans.
