Strava to shut down Fatmap by Oct 1st & integrates key features into Premium subscription
Strava will close down FATMAP, the 3D mapping platform it acquired two years ago, on October 1, 2024. Fatmap users can transfer their routes to Strava until the shutdown date. Founded in 2013, Fatmap provided high-resolution 3D maps for outdoor activities, especially for ski enthusiasts.
Strava has already integrated some Fatmap features for several months now, such as Flyover, into its premium subscription and plans to include Fatmap’s 3D satellite maps and basic route information into its app. However, more complex data like assigned grades and photos will not be transferred. Additionally, features like adventures, guidebooks, and waypoints will not be moved but can be downloaded by users.
Users must transfer their data before October 1 to prevent deletion, with the option to manually delete their data now. For those not interested in moving to Strava, onX Backcountry, Komoot and CalTopo seem like good alternatives for route planning.
