Microsoft to launch its new Xbox Mobile Gaming Store through a web-app in July
Microsoft is set to launch its Xbox mobile gaming store in July, as announced by Xbox president Sarah Bond at the Bloomberg Technology Summit. The goal is to deliver key aspects of the Xbox experience in the mobile store, ensuring a consistent gaming experience across devices. The aim is to ensure accessibility across all devices and regions, regardless of the policies of closed ecosystem stores.
The store will be web-based and initially will focus on mobile games developed by Microsoft's studios, starting with games like Candy Crush Saga and Minecraft, with future plans to include partner games. It's worth noting, though, that according to The Verge reports, the new store will not really offer direct game sales initially, but will feature deals for in-game items instead.
The launch is timed amidst ongoing discussions about anticipated regulatory changes for mobile app stores in Europe and the US. Although the platform will start as web-only, Microsoft has hinted at possible expansion beyond the web, potentially positioning it as a competitor to Google Play Store and the Apple App Store. Microsoft's challenge will be to establish the Xbox mobile store as a viable alternative to existing mobile game platforms.
