Windows 10 will start pushing you towards using a Microsoft account instead of a local one

In the two and a half years since its release, Windows 11 has yet to surpass its predecessor, Windows 10, in terms of market dominance. Microsoft continues to introduce new features to Windows 10, with the latest being a banner in the Settings app encouraging users to switch from local accounts to Microsoft accounts. This feature is part of the Windows 10 Build 19045.4353.

According to Microsoft's release notes, “This update starts the roll out of account-related notifications for Microsoft accounts in Settings Home. […] This feature displays notifications across the Start menu and Settings. You can manage your Settings notifications in Settings Privacy & security General.”

Using a Microsoft account on a PC can simplify data backup, subscription management, and account access. However, some users prefer local accounts, often due to privacy concerns. Microsoft's push against local accounts in consumer versions of Windows has been met with annoyance and criticism from many, including Elon Musk.

The new feature will be activated by default in Windows 10’s May 2024 Patch Tuesday, scheduled for release to the general public and IT administrators on May 14. This move is part of a larger trend where using a Windows computer without a Microsoft account is becoming increasingly challenging. For instance, Windows 11 Home does not officially offer the option to use a local account, though a special command can bypass this.

"...has been met with annoyance and criticism from many" I wonder why... It indeed is getting increasingly annoying - I'm already certain I will never buy a Windows laptop again, and most likely a Linux desktop... been testing some games on an old desktop it's so easy now. Why even bother with the Windows crap. Gotta find a solution for work devices though xD that'd be the greatest pain in the ass I guess... maybe I'll start asking employers for other options... hell i can consider a Mac, even xD

Between Microsoft's lax security that got the government to label them as a "national security risk" to this, big tech really has become the modern day villain.

It's just as concerning, if not more, that M$ collects as much data as humanly possible and has wide open back doors for government snooping.

a warning for everyone, Microsoft may had just remove the option to stop updates forever. The button or feature does not exist. The best you can do is stall for 30 days with pause.

They can push their M$ Account where the sun don't shine.

They will push updates like this forever, but won't keep your installation up-to-date forever. Funny.
