Beeper has been acquired by Automattic, and is now open to all after removing its waitlist

In an unexpected move, Automattic, the parent company of WordPress, has purchased Beeper, an all-in-one messaging app, for $125 million. Beeper allows users to access several popular third-party messaging platforms within the same main hub, including WhatsApp, Messenger, Telegram, Signal, Slack, Google Chat, Discord, among others (last year they even provided support for Messages on Android, although this feature was later discontinued due to several conflicts with Apple). This acquisition is the second of its kind for Automattic, following its purchase of Texts.com in October last year.

The company has announced the removal of the waitlist requirement for accessing Beeper, which means the client is now available for download on desktop platforms, including Windows, macOS, Linux and Chrome OS. The Android has been completely overhauled for almost a month, and is also now out of beta and available to the public, allowing users to access several messaging apps through their phones without even having them installed. It's also worth mentioning that the former Beeper Cloud app has been rebranded to this new version, simply called 'Beeper'.

It is expected that Beeper and Texts.com will eventually merge into a singular platform, aligning with the companies' objectives. Automattic's combined messaging team will concentrate on creating a powerful cross-platform messaging app, with a long-term goal of replacing many existing messaging methods with an open-source system, given that Beeper operates on Matrix, an open-source protocol widely utilized by businesses and governments worldwide.
