OpenAI launches o1 reasoning model and new $200-per-month ChatGPT Pro plan

OpenAI has announced the release of o1, a new model now available in ChatGPT, moving out of its preview phase. The o1 model is designed to offer faster and more powerful reasoning capabilities, particularly excelling in coding, math, and writing tasks. A notable feature of o1 is its ability to process image uploads, enabling it to apply reasoning to visuals for enhanced response quality.

The new model is more concise in its reasoning approach, resulting in quicker response times compared to its preview version. OpenAI reports that o1 reduces major errors on complex real-world questions by 34%, based on their testing. Access to OpenAI o1 is available immediately for Plus and Team users via the model selector, replacing the o1-preview. Enterprise and Edu users will gain access in one week. OpenAI is also working on integrating support for tools such as web browsing and file uploads into o1 in ChatGPT.

Future plans include making o1 accessible through the API, with features like function calling, developer messages, structured outputs, and vision support. Additionally, OpenAI is introducing ChatGPT Pro, a new $200-per-month subscription plan offering unlimited access to OpenAI o1 and a Pro-only version of o1 that provides more extended reasoning for even more reliable responses.

I hear this may have to do with "price anchoring". It's a marketing tactic in its exaggerated price increase for the latest model.

Yes, price hikes were to expect in AI industry. OpenAI is losing $5B a year (more than twice what they're earning) and since models training cost are skyrocketing (GPT 5 should cost about $1B to train), they need to find billions bucks every few months to keep existing. And since investments are slowing, they're relying more and more on users. But $200 a month is insane, and worse, they'll still need at least one million users paying $2400 every year to be sustainable. Even Bitcoins and NFT were a great bargain compared to AI.
