Telegram enhances mini apps with full-screen, geolocation, monetization options, and more

Telegram has rolled out a significant update to its mini apps, enhancing their functionality and user experience. These native-like web applications can now utilize the entire screen in both portrait and landscape orientations, and they have access to device motion information. This allows for innovative controls in games and immersive VR experiences, with developers able to lock screen orientation to prevent unwanted rotation.

Users can now place shortcuts to specific mini apps directly on their home screens and share their location with these apps, enabling the creation of location-based games and interactive event maps. The update also introduces a new privacy setting that lets users manage who can send them gifts, which are rewards tied to achievements within the apps.

Telegram Premium users gain additional features, such as setting emoji statuses from inside mini apps. These apps can integrate APIs from other services, automatically updating a user's status when they engage in activities like listening to music or watching movies. Media sharing is enhanced, allowing users to directly send content like referral codes and custom memes from mini apps to any chat.

Mini apps can now generate and download documents and files, such as AI-generated profile pictures or audio files. Developers can monetize their apps by offering subscriptions through Telegram Stars, providing multiple content and feature tiers. Customization options for loading screens have been expanded, enabling developers to add unique icons and colors via @BotFather. Additionally, to optimize performance, mini apps can access basic hardware information, allowing them to adjust settings based on device processing power and memory capacity for a smoother user experience.
