Asahi Linux enables preliminary AAA gaming on Apple Silicon Macs with x86 emulation

Fedora Asahi Remix has introduced preliminary support for gaming, addressing a long-standing user request. The new game playing toolkit integrates x86 emulation and Windows compatibility, along with conformant OpenCL 3.0. This development allows users to play commercial AAA games on Apple Silicon Macs running Fedora Asahi Remix 40, leveraging conformant Vulkan 1.3 and OpenGL 4.6 drivers.

To get started, users need to install Fedora Asahi Remix, upgrade to the latest drivers using dnf upgrade --refresh && reboot, and then install Steam with dnf install steam. While all M1/M2-series systems are supported, most games require 16 GB of memory due to emulation overhead. Although many games are playable, newer AAA titles do not yet achieve 60fps, with performance improvements expected in future updates. Indie games like Hollow Knight are reported to run at full speed.

This alpha release offers a preview of future capabilities, allowing users to enjoy games like Portal 2 as Fedora and Asahi continue to work towards a more polished 1.0 version.
