Twilio will discontinue Authy desktop applications from August 2024

Twilio has recently announced that the desktop versions of its popular two-factor authentication app, Authy, will be discontinued starting August 2024. This change will affect all desktop platforms including Windows, macOS, and Linux, as these applications reach their End-of-Life (EOL) phase.

According to Twilio, they “made this difficult decision to sunset the Twilio Authy desktop apps in order to streamline our focus and provide more value on existing product solutions for which we see increasing demand”.

For current users of the Authy desktop apps, Twilio suggests transitioning to their mobile applications, available on both iOS and Android platforms. In cases where users are unable to utilize the mobile app, Twilio advises considering alternatives such as 1Password, Dashlane, Ente, or one of its other alternatives.

Their macOS app is so slow on Apple Silicon systems, however I found that their iOS app is also installable on macOS if you have an Apple Silicon system and opens and runs super fast. Hopefully that remains the case which means newer macOS systems are still supported at least.

if you need the desktop application your best bet might be paying Bitwarden

Literally the only 2FA app with cross-platform sync between Linux and Android (with an actual desktop app). What a joke. Just spent an hour manually switching 2FA on all my accounts (20). I ended up picking Ente Auth for the mobile+web sync. Aegis doesn't sync, and 2FAS supports NFTs, so I won't be using them.

@mjbridges 2FA Authenticator (2FAS) icon 2FA Authenticator (2FAS) doesn't have a Desktop app. That's the main discussion once Authy will remain available on mobile devices.

Hi Medi22. You indicate that the 2FAS application supports NFTs and that for this reason you will not use it. Excuse my ignorance, what's wrong with that? I had chosen 2FAS to get rid of Authy until I read your message.

they're deprecating it because theres exploits to export the totp secrets to competing platforms. In order to fix this they need to allow subsidiary products like sendgrod to use other authentication platforms.

The desktop app is one of the reasons I chose Authy, I'm angry.
