Fortnite to return to iOS in Europe in 2024 following recent changes announced by Apple
Epic Games has announced that Fortnite, one of the most popular games in the world, will return to iOS in Europe in 2024, following a years-long dispute with Apple. The game's re-entry to the platform will be facilitated through the forthcoming Epic Games Store for iOS.
This development follows recent changes announced by Apple to its iOS operating system in the European Union. To comply with the Digital Markets Act (DMA), a set of pro-competition rules aimed at regulating six major tech companies, Apple will permit apps to be “sideloaded” — installed from sources outside its App Store.
This marks Fortnite's official re-entry to Apple's platform since its removal in August 2020. The game was pulled after Epic Games provided discounts for payments made directly to its store, bypassing Apple's App Store and Google Play, which both charge a 30 percent commission on in-app purchases.
Despite the upcoming changes allowing Epic Games to profit from iOS users once again (in Europe), the company stated on X/Twitter that it will “continue to argue to the courts and regulators that Apple is breaking the law”.
