SteamOS 3.5 preview brings HDR & VRR support, improved colors and bug fixes for Steam Deck
SteamOS 3.5 has been released to the Preview channel, bringing with it a variety of display enhancements and multiple fixes specifically for the Steam Deck. The updated version now includes support for High Dynamic Range (HDR) and Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), in addition to a new setting that allows for adjustments to display colors, including color vibrancy and temperature.
In terms of color rendering, the default setting for the Steam Deck has been modified to emulate the sRGB color gamut, leading to a slightly more vibrant and warmer color display. Further to this, the update introduces Stretch and Zoom scaling as new options to handle various aspect ratios. Improvements have also been made to latency in situations where the application's rendering speed is slower than the display's refresh rate.
Significantly, SteamOS 3.5 addresses an issue where certain workloads experienced severe CPU performance problems unless Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT) was manually deactivated. Additionally, when connected to the Steam Deck, external storage devices will now be automatically mounted.
The latest release also incorporates numerous minor enhancements and bug fixes.
