macOS Sonoma launched with widgets, game mode, improved video conferencing, and more!

Apple has released macOS Sonoma (macOS 14.0), offering several new features to Mac users. The update allows the use of persistent desktop widgets through Continuity, meaning iPhone widgets can now be used on the desktop without installing the respective apps. Users can play or pause media, access home controls, or perform various tasks from different apps from their desktop, somewhat resembling Windows Vista widgets (but nicer).

The Sonoma update includes a new iOS-style lock screen for Mac, similar to the lock screens of iPhones and iPads, but with a password field. It also introduces a Game Mode for improved gaming performance on Macs by prioritizing CPU and GPU resources and enhancing wireless gaming accessory responsiveness. The new version enhances videoconferencing with a feature for users to overlay themselves in a bubble during presentations, and reactions support. Search filters have been added to iMessage conversations for easier navigation, and profiles support has been added to Safari users for a more personalized browsing experience, including support for web apps that can be docked for quick access. Many other apps have also received new features, including improved PDF and scan viewing in Notes, group password sharing with enhanced security, intelligent grocery lists in Apple Reminders, an updated autocorrect system, and a high-performance mode for remote access in Screen Sharing.

Sonoma was released just a couple of days after the iOS 17 update., and the download is approximately 7.7GB, so users should ensure they have sufficient space before starting the update. In order to download it, users can go to System Settings General Software Update and follow the instructions.
