KC Softwares announces shutdown, ceasing sales of the popular SUMo app and many others
KC Softwares, the creator of the popular Software Updates Monitor SUMo, has declared it is shutting down. The company, established in 2008, is known for its role in simplifying updates for Windows applications.
SUMo, KC Softwares' primary product, scans installed Windows applications and matches them with the latest versions in a database, making software updates easier for users. Despite SUMo being their primary product, the company also developed a lot of other utilities, many of which are listed on AlternativeTo.net, including DUMo for driver updates, IDPhotoStudio, an ID photo duplicator & printer, VideoInspector for identifying required video playback codecs, KCleaner for automatic hard drive disk cleaning, Startup Sentinel for managing autostart entries, HDDExpert for drive's health & performance monitoring, MassCert for digital signatures, and many more.
The company's website now displays a termination notice, announcing that all products will reach "End-Of-Life" status on October 31, 2023. Consequently, sales of KC Softwares' products have ceased. While the exact reason for the closure is not disclosed, the company has acknowledged the existence of "several good alternatives" in the market like Ninite, Patch My PC or UpdateHub, which you can verify by visiting the app pages on AlternativeTo for each of these products (and, of course, suggest new alternatives). Once the server architecture is dismantled, server-dependent products like SUMo and DUMo will stop working.
Our take: It's a shame to see such a broad catalog of classic apps go, but it seems that Kyle Katarn has commented that he is willing to publish a modified version of SUMo, allowing a third-party company or individual to keep the "current" SUMo still working.
