Asahi Linux announces update to graphics drivers with support for openGL 3.1 and openGL ES 2.0

Asahi Linux, the open source project that aims to provide a polished Linux experience on Apple Silicon Macs, has announced an update to its graphics drivers. The update brings OpenGL 2.1 over OpenGL 3.0 up to OpenGL 3.1, and bumps up OpenGL ES 2.0 support to OpenGL ES 3.0. This means that users will be able to play more games and use more applications with better functionality.

However, these drivers are experimental and not yet conformant to the OpenGL or OpenGL ES specifications. Users who want to opt-in to the work-in-progress drivers will need to run the -edge packages, but should understand that there may be bugs.

The new functionality packed into OpenGL 3.0, 3.1, and OpenGL ES 3.0 includes multiple render targets, multisampling, transform feedback, texture buffer objects, and much more. These features will provide users with a more immersive and dynamic experience on their Apple Silicon Macs.

Asahi Linux is a community-driven project that aims to provide a free and open source alternative to the macOS operating system on Apple Silicon Macs. The project has gained a lot of attention and support from the community since its inception in 2020.

The update to the graphics drivers is a significant step forward for Asahi Linux, as it brings more functionality to users and further solidifies the project's position as a viable alternative to macOS. Asahi Linux continues to work towards its goal of providing a polished Linux experience on Apple Silicon Macs, and the community eagerly awaits further updates and developments.
