WebP support arrives in the Windows 11 Photos app with the latest release on the Dev and Canary Insider channels

Microsoft has recently released an updated version of the Microsoft Photos app for Windows 11, catering specifically to Windows Insiders. This update brings a range of new features and improvements to enhance the overall user experience. One notable addition is the support for the WebP format, which has gained significant popularity across the internet.

With the latest version of the Photos app, users can now enjoy a new and improved slideshow experience, complete with a timeline scrollbar for easier navigation. Additionally, a spot fix tool has been introduced, allowing users to make quick and precise adjustments to their photos. These enhancements aim to make the editing and viewing process more seamless and enjoyable for Windows 11 users.

Of particular interest is the inclusion of WebP format support within the Photos app, confirmed by Jennifer Gentleman, a Senior Program Manager at Microsoft. WebP is a widely used image format that offers efficient compression and high-quality visuals. With this update, the Photos app can now seamlessly display WebP images, treating them just like any other supported image format. However, it's important to note that this feature is currently available only in the development builds of the Photos app with the build number 2023.11050.5007.0 or newer.

To take advantage of the WebP format support, Windows 11 users must install the WebP Image Extensions app. Developed by Microsoft, this free application brings WebP image support to Windows, benefiting not only the Photos app but also other applications on the operating system. The WebP Image Extensions app is based on Chromium, the open-source project that powers various web browsers, including the classic Microsoft Edge. By leveraging native support for WebP in Chromium, Microsoft ensures a seamless and optimized experience for users.
