Microsoft to force Outlook and Teams users to open links in Microsoft Edge by default

Microsoft has announced that it will be forcing Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Teams to open links in its own web browser, Microsoft Edge, rather than the user's default browser on Windows. The change is set to roll out to organizations over the next 30 days, with Microsoft 365 users gradually being switched over to the new link-opening policy.

A Reddit user recently posted a message from the Microsoft 365 admin center that revealed how the change would be rolled out. According to the message, “Web links from all accounts in the Outlook for Windows app will open in Microsoft Edge with this change. […] In the future, a similar experience will arrive in Teams.”

The move has been met with criticism from some users, who feel that Microsoft is trying to force them to use its own browser instead of giving them the freedom to choose their preferred option. This move is just the latest example of this trend.

Despite the backlash, Microsoft seems determined to move forward with the change. It remains to be seen how users will react and whether they will ultimately embrace Microsoft Edge or stick with their preferred browser.
