Edubuntu returns as Official Ubuntu Flavor for Educational Computing
Edubuntu is set to make a comeback as an official Ubuntu flavor as part of the upcoming Ubuntu 23.04 release. Initially developed for use in classrooms, homes, and communities, Edubuntu is based on the Ubuntu Desktop flavor and features the GNOME desktop environment.
Edubuntu 23.04 includes several educational apps such as Inkscape SVG, Scribus, GCompris, TuxPaint, Stellarium, and Calibre. It also features apps from the KDE educational suite, including KAlgebra, KBruch, Kig, KTouch, KmPlot, Rocs, Step, and Marble. You can also count with various games such as Tux Math, Jigzo, Kanagram, GBrainy, Atomix, KHangMan, Ri-li, and Blinken.
Edubuntu 23.04 offers administrative tools to help parents customize the installation and make it appropriate for their children's age. However, it will only be available for 64-bit computers, although an ARM64 version may be offered in the future.

Ubuntu 23.04 will arrive on April 20th, and the official flavor list will be:
- Ubuntu (GNOME).
- Kubuntu (KDE/Plasma).
- Lubuntu (LXQt).
- Xubuntu (XFCE).
- Ubuntu MATE (MATE).
- Ubuntu Budgie (Budgie).
- Ubuntu Kylin (Ukui)
- Ubuntu Studio (KDE/Plasma).
- Ubuntu Unity (Unity).
- Ubuntu Cinnamon (Cinnamon).
- Edubuntu (GNOME with meta-packages for education).
Our take: The return of Edubuntu as an official Ubuntu flavor is an essential development for the Linux community's need for educational-focused GNU/Linux distributions for children.
