Mozilla adds over 450 new extensions to Firefox web browser for Android
Mozilla has recently announced the addition of over 450 new extensions (494 at the time of writing this post) to Firefox for Android. These extensions can be accessed on the “Firefox for Android extensions” page. The announcement signifies the initiation of a new open extension ecosystem on mobile, providing developers the liberty to create and publish extensions, and users the convenience to easily install them on Firefox for Android.
Vicky Chin, Vice President of Engineering at Firefox, stated “We’re thrilled to bring this experience to Firefox for Android, where we’re the only major Android browser to support an open extension ecosystem. In the coming months, we plan to enable more extensions for people to choose from and customize their own mobile internet experience.”
Despite the new Android ecosystem requiring time to develop the comprehensive diversity of content that desktop extensions provide, several major desktop extensions are already available on Firefox for Android. These include privacy-focused content blockers like uBlock Origin and Ghostery, anti-tracking tool Privacy Badger, and color customizer Dark Reader, among many others.
This development follows Mozilla's announcement four months ago about full browser extension support coming to Firefox for Android.
