Google Maps' Driving Mode for Android might be axed in 2024, favoring Google Assistant

Google Maps Driving Mode, a feature for Android users that offers dedicated-distraction free navigation, might be discontinued in February 2024, as suggested by evidence found from two strings in the Google app version 14.52, as reported by 9to5Google.

One of these strings hints at the removal of an unspecified "view" in February 2024, possibly referring to the Driving Mode. The second string implies a shift towards using Google Assistant for tasks such as calling, messaging, or playing media while navigating, indicating a potential focus on audio-only interactions.

Despite the safety benefits of audio-only interactions, this change has raised concerns about a potential reduction in functionality, especially for users who are uncomfortable with voice assistants, or if something goes wrong, users might not switch to the screen view anymore. In that case, there's still the Android Auto alternative.
