Matrix messaging client Fractal 5 is a complete GTK 4 rewrite with enhanced features
Fractal, the Matrix messaging app designed for GNOME, has announced the release of its latest version, Fractal 5. The new iteration is a complete rewrite of Fractal 4, utilizing GTK 4, libadwaita, and the Matrix Rust SDK for its foundation.
Despite the comprehensive overhaul, Fractal 5 retains the familiar features of its predecessor, while introducing several new functionalities. Users can locate rooms to engage in discussions on a variety of topics, or converse privately in a secure environment, courtesy of end-to-end encryption. The app also supports the sending of richly formatted messages, file transfers, and location sharing.
Further enhancements include the ability to reply to specific messages, react using emojis, and edit or delete messages. Fractal 5 allows users to view images, and play audio and video directly within the conversation. Additional features include the ability to see who has read messages and who is currently typing. The software also supports logging into multiple accounts simultaneously, with Single-Sign On (SSO) support.
Fractal 5 is now accessible via GNOME GitLab's repository and on Flathub. The development team has also revealed that they are currently working on incorporating key features that are currently absent, such as notification settings, room settings, and moderation capabilities.
