Apple to allow iPhone users in EU to download apps outside official App Store by 2024

In a significant shift in policy, Apple is preparing to allow iPhone users in the European Union to download apps from sources outside of its official App Store. This move comes in response to European regulations, with the changes expected to be implemented by the first half of 2024.

The iOS 17.2 beta code provides new evidence of this shift, indicating that Apple is moving towards enabling sideloading on iOS devices. While earlier rumors suggested that these changes would coincide with the release of iOS 17.2, it now appears they will be introduced in a future iOS update.

Historically, Apple has been staunchly against sideloading, maintaining a tight control over its App Store ecosystem. However, the upcoming deadline for compliance with the EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA) on March 6th, 2024 is likely driving this change.

Should other countries adopt similar legislation, it is conceivable that the option to use alternate app stores could extend beyond the European Union. This marks a significant shift in Apple's approach to app distribution and could potentially reshape the global app market.

What a novel idea. Being able to do what you want with an (overpriced) device that you supposedly own.....
