Valve says Counter-Strike 2 won't support macOS because there aren't enough players
Valve officially launched Counter-Strike 2 on its digital distribution platform, Steam, a couple of weeks ago, after months of private testing. The updated game, however, only supports Windows and Linux operating systems, with macOS being excluded from the list of supported platforms. Valve has confirmed that there are no plans to release Counter-Strike 2 on macOS.
In a statement on the Steam Support page, Valve explained that “As technology advances, we have made the difficult decision to discontinue support for older hardware, including DirectX 9 and 32-bit operating systems. Similarly, we will no longer support macOS. Combined, these represented less than one percent of active CS:GO players.”
Moving forward, Counter-Strike 2 will exclusively support 64-bit Windows and Linux operating systems. Mac users can continue to play CS:GO until January 1, 2024, with a legacy version of the game, lacking official matchmaking but otherwise unchanged from the final pre-CS2 version, remaining available. Post this date, Valve has warned that certain functionality may degrade or fail.
Valve has also announced that DirectX 9 and/or 32-bit Windows users who purchased a Prime Status Upgrade on Steam between the announcement of the Counter-Strike 2 Limited Test on March 22, 2023, and the game's launch on September 27, 2023, are eligible for a refund.
macOS users who played CS:GO on a Mac between the Counter-Strike 2 Limited Test announcement and the game's launch, and where most of their CS:GO playtime was on macOS, regardless of the purchase date of their Prime Status Upgrade, are also eligible for a refund. Valve will be offering these refunds until December 1, 2023.
I know that MacOS' market share in gaming is minuscule compared to Windows, but this only worsens the situation for CS2, which is already considered Valve's launch in years. Plus being limited only to Steam and ignoring the console market...
technically the game is available on console, just not on one you might own... but usually esports games aren't played on consoles, at least not in the competitive scene... I'm currently on Linux Mint and I enjoy playing CS2
