Manjaro is becoming a corporate entity to ensure smooth development
The development team behind the popular Manjaro Linux distribution has formed a new corporate entity in order to better ensure a constant development environment for the future of the operating system.
Announced via a post by Manjaro developer Philip Müller on the distro’s official forum, this move comes as the next step for Manjaro, which has grown exponentially since its start as a 3-person project back in 2011. In order to ensure that development will continue in a smooth and uninterrupted fashion, the following 2 major changes are happening:
- Donated funds will go to a non-profit “fiscal host 133” which will then accept and administer donations on the project’s behalf. This secures the donations and makes their use transparent.
- A new company, Manjaro GmbH & Co. KG, will be established. This is to enable full-time employment of operating system maintainers and exploration of future commercial opportunities.
According to Müller, this restructuring of Manjaro's development will enable to following possibilities:
enable developers to commit full time to Manjaro and its related projects; interact with other developers in sprints and events around Linux; protect the independence of Manjaro as a community-driven project, as well as protect its brand; provide faster security updates and a more efficient reaction to the needs of users; provide the means to act as a company on a professional level
It's emphasized that the Manjaro Linux operating system itself is not changing, with project's current scope and development goals set to be maintained for the foreseeable future. The primary reasoning for this more structured approach to development is to secure financial self-sufficiency and viability for the distro and its community.
Manjaro GmbH & Co. KG as a corporate entity was officially founded on July 8th, 2019. Manjaro will, reportedly, always be freely usable by its community. This corporate formation is to help ensure that.
