Old dedicated video game platforms from childhood can often be disproportionately expensive for what is oftentimes just a desire for a nostalgic escape from the moment. That’s where emulation comes into play. From multi-system emulation systems such as RetroArch to specialized and high performance emulators such as higan, there are many modern methods to play the games of your childhood without having to break the bank in order to get old hardware.

- WinFellow is a Commodore Amiga emulator that has high compatibility and supports all existing models.
- BoycottAdvance is a free and portable emulator for the Nintendo Gameboy Advance handheld. Program is available on Windows, Macintosh, BeOS, Linux, FreeBSD and there is even a Java port, playable online.
- KiGB is the most accurate and free portable emulator for Gameboy, Gameboy Color and Super Gameboy for Windows, Linux and MS-DOS.
- Sixtyforce is an emulator that runs Nintendo 64 games. It does this by dynamically translating the code that a Nintendo 64 uses into something your Mac understands.
- Lxdream is an emulator for the Sega Dreamcast system, running on Linux and OS X. While it is still in heavy development, it is capable of running most demos and some games.

Gens32 is currently discontinued since the project evolved into Gens32 Surreal ( Gens32 Surreal ).
