Claims to remain free for people signing up during their launch
I was an early adopter of y.gy and despite some broken features in the interface I thought it was a decent service and set about migrating my back catalog of shortened links from Bit.ly since they ceased permitting custom domains for less than an arm and a leg. Imagine my disgust when I log into y.gy today and learn that they not only decided to discontinue the free tier, but also deactivate the links that users previously on the free tier had created unless they upgraded. I'd have shrugged it off if they had just prevented creation of any new ones and honored the terms offered at sign-up, but this kind of bait and switch really torques me up.
Reading the blog post the developer made about the change I was even more dismayed to find not even so much as a token apology to the users they reneged on; the fact that they unilaterally changed the service they were offering with no effort to honor preexisting arrangements didn't even appear to enter their mind. The entire blog post amounted to a shrug and "Spammers are bad, and I'm too lazy to find workable countermeasures considering I'm busy trying to launch a new product anyway." I wouldn't trust this developer any further than I could throw them and advise others to treat them with extreme skepticism.
Hi Peter, nobody's links were disabled after we moved from Free to Paid.
I've already contacted you via Twitter to check your account and am awaiting your reply. Please let me know your account email and we will confirm that no links have been deleted. To be clear, the only case in which your links would be deleted would be if you linked to malware or other spam.
