Comment summary: Xmarks was widely appreciated for its cross-browser sync capabilities but faced criticism post-LastPass acquisition for becoming unreliable and slow, with frequent errors and data loss reports. Users were particularly upset about the service shutdown in 2018. Many sought alternatives, like EverSync, due to Xmarks' failure to function as expected and ongoing discontinuation. There was nostalgia for its early efficiency, but consensus shows major dissatisfaction in its later years.

I've used this for so many years I forgot when I didn't. Even is accidents happened those has now become a rule. This was the no frills, no social, no picture, perfect bookmark backup.

Now days you can't use it together with more than one browser. Even if you turn off Chrome bookmarks, FF or other browsers the bookmarks can suddenly still just disappear or multiply. Or both. Having added bookmarks between noticing this makes it a nightmare, the worst case merging two files with regex.

The largest duplication I ever got was almost 30-thousand.

The webpage is painfully slow making manipulation of bookmarks impossible, interface has not changed. Nor has any tools to manage your bookmarks not been updated. Deduping doesn't allow you to mark what directory you want too keep and it seems like it select it at random. No way to import/merge bookmarks.

It feels more or less like an abandoned project since NOTHING has happened during all those years.

Summary: From being THE one has become THE headache.

So sad for such a wonderful solution, in the 90-ies.

EverSync is the best replacement for XMarks, which stops syncing with May 1, 2018

I am convinced, EverSync is the best replacement for XMarks, which is no longer available after May 1, 2018. EverSync is a multi-platform bookmark syncing service, very useful, if you want to sync your bookmarks on more than one browser. Like XMarks did, its service works with browser extensions for Chrome, Firefox or Internet Explorer or a smartphone app for Android, iOS or Windows Phone.

On April 2nd, 2018 I have registered to a free EverSync-Account on my first computer and did the first bookmarks-sync (as the first step only on this one computer) parallel to XMarks. On my Lumia 640 smartphone with Windows Phone and on my job-computer I first uninstalled the XMarks-FF-AddOn and then installed the Eversync-Firefox-Addon. With EverSync it's very easy to find and delete empty folders and to find all bookmarks. EverySync is a very perfect replacement for XMarks, which I used about several years without greater problems.

Until March, 30 2018, when I got the E-Mail "Support for Xmarks is ending on May 1, 2018" I would have given a rating of 5 stars to XMarks. Because a free bookmark-sync-AddOn for more than one browser is very important for me, I do not like the discontinuing of the XMarks-service. So my new rating for XMarks now is only one star. My rating for EverSync ist 5 stars and my recommendation is to replace XMarks with EverSync.

May 1st it's going away ... The alternatives all seem to be lacking.

EverSync icon EverSync is a great tool, way less bugs than Xmarks and better UI

Stealthgyro

I'm going to disagree with better UI for Ever Sync, but at the moment I have been testing it out.

TheEmperorArt

Personally I find Eversync's UI for syncing, and arranging the bookmarks far more modern than Xmarks which too me feels like it stumbled right out of 2003. Not only that it does not duplicate the bookmarks or take out the bookmarks from the designated folders which i unfortunately Xmarks did, which cause huge headache and problems.

Today users received an email from Xmarks that they're shutting their system down as of May 1st! Local apps will work on your computer. But, they're not going to sync so what's the use of keeping it around?

Is being discontinued by Lastpass. Sure, it did lose data occasionally, but it was easy to recover.

Was very good but... doesn't work the past 12 months (this is March 2018). Wastes time and gives many buggy error messages across different browsers if you leave it active. Avoid, unless there is some major update that assures it works.
