Overall, a solid program and you can't really knock them for it. While technically it is freemium software, if you never pay for it, all they do is bug you whenever you turn it on to buy a license, which as far as freemium products go is pretty mild.

I actually moved to WinRAR from 7-zip because of a few critical security holes in the latter - and yes, I have paid for it. I love how well RAR5 performs in terms of compression while still maintaining a good speed (if all I was after was a high compression ratio, I'd use ZPAQ for everything), and the user interface is exactly how I want it.

What is WinRAR?
WinRAR is a popular compression utility with over 500 million users worldwide. It compresses files for efficient and secure transfer, aiding in quick email transmission and organized data storage. It can open various file formats and is compatible with Windows 11 and Windows 10. It's available in over 40 languages and can work on multiple operating systems.
WinRAR's compression abilities produce smaller archives, saving disk space, reducing transmission costs, and saving time. It supports many compression formats like RAR, ZIP, CAB, ARJ, LZH, TAR, GZip, UUE, ISO, BZIP2, Z, and 7-Zip. It specializes in multimedia files, with its unique compression algorithm optimally compressing multimedia files, executables, and object libraries.
WinRAR can split archives into separate volumes for storage across multiple disks. It uses AES 256-bit encryption and authenticated signature technology for data security during transmission. It offers a 40-day free trial for testing. Licenses are valid across all language and platform versions, and users with multiple licenses can mix versions as needed.

He always ask you to pay for it... and you always ignore it. Forgive us WinRar.
I like the checksum and recovery. Don't like the price.
I mean, they don't even force you to pay it, but OK.

In Russia, and not only, this piece of software was abused by more cracks and serials than any other in existence. Including "Photoshop" even. However, I only used it for a while. Then I came to "Haozip". Later on to something else. These days I am using "Haozip" again. I don't know why I dumped it, as it's a copy of "Winrar" with some extra functions. Also, the best % compressor is TAR.XZ. Although slow. LZ4 is very fast. With results much better than ZIP. RAR or ZIP are nothing in comparison. There is also LZTURBO, which could be the fastest of all. I have not yet tested it. See for yourself. Also, ARC ("Freearc") is powerful for its use of special modules and preprocessing files. Gives much better results than "Winrar". But for the sake of piracy and availability none of these algos or programs ever gained the popularity of "Winrar". Pirates and torrents totally made that program. So much that it survived decades. Because if you used it when you were 12, you would be using it still when you were 35.
I use it because it is lean and fast. There are some free products out there that as good as WinRAR, but they have prehistoric, ugly UIs. With WinRAR, you can actually use pretty good skins to replace outdated default one.
A classic program with flexible settings and all the functions you need. But it's paid and promotes you to buy license at every open and therefore it's proprietary. There are many good free alternatives, so use them unless you need a specific things that WinRar does better. Also personally I don't like overloaded interface, and some other soft like 7zip compress better.
