What is wall?

wall ("write all") is the traditional Unix command, shipped with util-linux on Linux, that displays a message, or the contents of a file, on the terminals of all users currently logged in.

When run by root it reaches every terminal regardless of the users' mesg settings, and it can be limited to the members of a group. System administrators have used it for decades to announce shutdowns, reboots and maintenance windows.

It is preinstalled on practically every Linux distribution.
