Hello.
In addition to the report below I would like to add links to russian independent media (that publishes in english) where you can find plenty of evidence that VK is an unsafe platform to use and that is it not "Free - Proprietary" and very much like Chinese Weibo:
https://novayagazeta.eu https://meduza.io/en
I am genuinely surprised to see VK listed here. I'm Russian and had been using the platform for years since 2008. It is indeed the most popular platform in Russia and it was created by Pavel Durov, the person who later left/was forced to leave the VK project and created Telegram app.
Presently, VK is 100% a government controlled media platform (via a quasi-private company). It is a common knowledge for the majority of russians who value the freedom of speech that it is absolutely unsafe to use VK platform. VK is moderated and censored by the government. There are numerous cases of people being put to jail for openly disagreeing and saying something against the war in Ukraine or the government itself on VK platform. Public spaces in VK that were critical towards government and the war were forced to close and owners of those spaces were jailed or fled the country. Promoting VK is like promoting Chinese Weibo platform.
Perhaps for a foreigner it can be used with a relative safety, but nobody should be fooled by the "Free - Proprietary" tag it has here fo some reason. It is as "free" as any government controlled media platform in an autocratic country.
Thank you for accepting feedback.
Pros: in files uploaded by other users, it happens that there are interesting; the structure of the site, developed in the mid-2000s, is much more logical and thoughtful than in Facebook. Cons: the fight against illegal content has led to the fact that this social network has lost what caused so many to register on it — music and films. Freedom of expression in it is destroyed by the FSB's full and unrestricted access to all content without restrictions. As a result, the social network has become not only useless, but also dangerous. Especially for people living in the allied countries of the Russian Empire.
Better than Facebook. But blocked me for no reason after I was on it for only three weeks for no reason other than violation of policy, no details, following a changed password. Is it against policy to change a forgotton password?! Never used the App; just Brave Browser. Maybe VK didn't like that either. Call me or leave email. Maybe we can resolve this. Have a nice day.
It is Russia-oriented. If you happen to know Russian and have friends there, it will be ok. If you are English speaking, you may feel a stranger. Yes, technically they are multilingual, but you can see that Russia rulez.
