It's not so functional as Advanced File Organizer, but there is nothing better.

After evaluating all three of the Linux alternatives to Gentibus on Windows, I found that none of them work on the current (21.3) version of Linux Mint. None are currently supported, and all have build issues, missing dependencies, or both.

Unfortunately, Gentibus doesn't run under Wine. It attempts to replace a Windows DLL, which causes havok with Wine.

Fortunately, the Windows version of VVV does work under Linux. It doesn't have all of the features of Gentibus (especially search functions), and it has redraw issues, both on Wine and Windows natively. But it does allow you to catalog external disks and maintain a database of them.

It's useful for people (like me) who have lots of offline data that needs to be cataloged.

may be i only used v1.4 and now is on v1.5; but FOSS always suck. the UI, which cross platform, is always sad.

luckily I dig out AFO advanced file organizer and AFO still rocks.

sometimes, commercial grade is commercial grade.

Allows you to search the contents of a drive that is not connected. Useful if you have various drives and want to know on which drive said file is. UI is a bit outdated.

What is Virtual Volumes View?

VVV is an application that catalogs the content of removable volumes like CD and DVD disks for off-line searching. Folders and files can also be arranged in a single, virtual file system. Each folder of this virtual file system can contain files from many disks so you can arrange your data in a simple and logical way.

VVV also stores metadata information from MP3 files: author, title, album and so on.

It is possible to share the same catalog, stored in a network server, among Windows, Linux and OSX computers. The network server is simply a computer running a database server program.
