An innumerable number of beautiful pictures, extensively categorized and free to use however you like.
Great free stock photo site. I would like there to be a bit more tech images thou, its mostly like landscapes and stuff like that and hard to use for a tech blogger.
It wasnt a news report it was from their blog that claims they have partnership with companys. I try to contact them but has you can guess it is not easy thing to do so i have no answers if they are telling the truth.
No matter what the picture you using in unsplash you can not break trademark laws, copyright laws and fair use laws. Considering all these apply to the unsplash pictures of their so called partners it can not be a public domain picture.
i can not confirm if the pictures are 100% public domain, there is no check up and quality might very.
I can confirm that for you. The photos are NOT public domain. They are under a special kind of open source license somewhat like CC0. While the net result for the casual lay user would be the same, legally they're both a different kettle of fish.
The check is via the community. Although the quality could vary, it would be as declared - no subterfuge or click-baiting.
Here is what they say about their license on their website --
License
All photos published on Unsplash can be used for free. You can use them for commercial and noncommercial purposes. You do not need to ask permission from or provide credit to the photographer or Unsplash, although it is appreciated when possible.
More precisely, Unsplash grants you an irrevocable, nonexclusive, worldwide copyright license to download, copy, modify, distribute, perform, and use photos from Unsplash for free, including for commercial purposes, without permission from or attributing the photographer or Unsplash. This license does not include the right to compile photos from Unsplash to replicate a similar or competing service. [My emphasis]

The problem is trademark, they can not give it under Public domain. They claim brands like google, Harley-Davidson, Square, Boxed Water, Le Creuset, and Timberland are allowing it but i can not confirm any such actions from the companys: https://medium.com/unsplash/introducing-unsplash-for-brands-3b60d1b4ad0c?
Public domain is more than just allowing someone to use your photos, it also must be ok to post art that isnt going to make someone go to a legal battle. Laws are still laws, a trademark must be protected therefore i cant recommend the site due to unreabile sources.

Instead of linking to a news report on a third-party website, please substantiate your allegation that "they claim brands like google, Harley-Davidson, Square, Boxed Water, Le Creuset, and Timberland are allowing it" with a direct link to that claim on the Unsplash website. Because otherwise you're just slandering their name. FYI, I could find no such claim on the Unsplash website but I may have missed it.
