Said about Unciv as an alternative
In terms of gameplay it is an almost 1:1 copy of Civ-5. It is also easy to create mods, so you can adjust the ruleset, graphics, add units, add nations ... you name it.

jensthenent thinks FreeCiv is an alternative to Unciv
Pro: It is also Free and Open Source. Also inspired by the original "Civilization". Also works on Linux. Con: FreeCiv can not be played on Android.- jensthenent Upvoted a comment on UncivjeFree, Add-less, small, faithful to the original

Awesome game. A few reasons why I love this game:
(1) It is Open Source and Free. Just like FreeCiv. But unlike FreeCiv, which is based on the beautiful but rather old Civilization-2, this one is based on Civilisation-5.
(2) In terms of the game rules it is an almost 1:1 copy of Civilization-5. The devolopers did not try to "mix their own ideas" in, but stayed true to the originial.
(3) It is fantastic for modding, much more than the original Civilization-5 (which was already quite decent for modders). The data model of UNCIV is much easier to comprehend and edit, than that of Civ-5. The so-called "uniques" are a powerful tool for modders.
(4) It works on Android devices! How cool is that!!
