What is tagdock?

tagdock runs server-side Google Tag Manager on your own Linux server with Docker Compose, as an alternative to paid sGTM hosting.

It follows Google's manual setup guide for running the tagging server outside Google Cloud. For every GTM server container it starts a preview server and a tagging server, with Caddy in front for HTTPS certificates from Let's Encrypt. If the server already runs nginx or another reverse proxy, the containers can listen on local ports and that proxy handles HTTPS instead.

One server can run several containers, for example one per client. When you add a site, tagdock asks for the Container Config, shows which GTM container it belongs to and warns when a domain does not point to the server yet.

Docker does not restart unhealthy containers by itself, so tagdock has a heal command that restarts tagging servers that got stuck, and an update command that pulls the latest image. Both can run from cron.

tagdock is a single Bash script, released under the MIT license.
