Tachiyomi got hit hard by a lawsuit from a company unhappy about people reading their content through the app and skipping their ads. You should switch to Mihon instead—it's an open-source fork of Tachiyomi, has all the same features, and keeps the spirit alive. Open-source forever!

Tachiyomi was sued into oblivion by a company who disliked the fact that users use the app to read from their site without seeing their ads. Go use Mihon instead. It's an open-source fork of Tachiyomi with feature parity. Long live FOSS.

Comment summary: Tachiyomi is highly praised for being a versatile and customizable manga reader app for Android, offering numerous sources and features. Users appreciate its open-source nature, absence of ads, and integration with manga tracking sites. While generally positive, there are concerns regarding recent changes in third-party extension handling, which some feel compromise security. Positive mentions highlight its wide source collection and robust community support.

Best manga app for Android

As of version 0.15.2 the Tachiyomi github purged it's extension repository of all extensions for third party sites.

The main branch of Tachiyomi has the largest open source community compared to it's branches or other similar apps. Because of this, third party extensions hosted in the official repository, maintained by the community, and scrutinized by many eyes, could be "trusted" to a certain extent.

This purge forces users to find third party extensions from repositories that have a smaller open source community and are therefore more likely to be infected, buggy, or privacy-compromising than before.

Also because of the possible backlash from this abrupt change, the Tachiyomi reddit and Discord have been locked.

This purge and subsequent lockdown with absolutely no input from the community at large not only could compromise user's security, but totally goes against the principals of being Free Open Source Software in the first place.

Updates: The Tachiyomi main branch will no longer be maintained but a clone that aims to take over the project named Mihon is in the works. The TachiyomiSY and TachiyomiAZ branches are still being maintained, and will move over to being downstream of Mihon once that gets started up. Out of the box extensions will still be gone but it appears the community has mostly united around one extension repository in named Keiyoushi.

Some released forks have been added. Feel free to vote for them if you feel like it.

  • Numerous manga site extensions which I've heard of
  • Ability to automatically fetch & download new chapters
  • Ability to integrate with manga tracking sites (such as MAL) & automatically update read chapters
  • Open-source
  • Some extensions get 404'd, even with the mentioned workaround. Suppose it's just a side-effect of free manga.

One of, if not the best application to read manga from different sources. No ads, no registration, notifications about new chapters, saving locally as ebook\comic reader compatible formats, nsfw warnings and tags filtering etc.
