Very restrictive for free version and hard to use. Graphical User interface confusing.
'Free' is such a lie - you can only view 10 responses to your survey, but they don't tell you this until you receive your 11th response, so they hold your data hostage until you pay a monthly or annual fee. Ridiculously overpriced for the basic personal plan.
Has anyone checked out
CusJo ? Its seems nobody has heard of them but they beat the incumbents on features and their AI capabilities.

Freemium model with a very restricted free version.
There are a lot of survey tools that claim to have a freemium model or simply say that their services are free. SurveyMonkey is definitely one of them but as you say, the free version is in many ways too restricted to be used for any significant projects.
The only two real freemium survey tools available today (to my knowledge) are Responster and Typeform. There are, of course, limitations to the free plans on both services, but very little compared to those of SurveyMonkey, FluidSurveys, QuestionPro etc.
Both tools also have a much lower entry price for their premium services ($19 for Responster and $29 for Typeform).
Hope this helps!
A really good alternative to SurveyMonkey is Smart Survey. I've used them for a while and they've always satisfied my needs.
