What is SpotAsk?

SpotAsk is a lightweight, hotkey-driven macOS menu-bar AI assistant designed with the philosophy: "Ask first. Decide where it goes after."

Key Features:

  • Instant Hotkey Capture: Summon SpotAsk anywhere with a global shortcut (Option + Space by default). Type your question immediately without window-switching friction.
  • Direct BYOK In-App Answers: Connect your own OpenAI-compatible API or Anthropic key. API keys are stored securely in the native macOS Keychain. Free, open source (AGPL-3.0), no subscription fees.
  • External Ask (Query Routing): Route queries directly to external web interfaces (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Grok), native URI scheme apps, or custom terminal commands (local agents) — then automatically closes without consuming API tokens or saving history.
  • Selection Toolbar: Select text in any application to trigger quick AI translation, rewriting, summarizing, or polishing.
  • Context-Aware OCR & Multimodal: Attach screenshots or system context directly to prompts for visual understanding.
  • Native & Responsive: Built natively with Swift and SwiftUI for minimal resource usage, instantaneous startup, and seamless macOS integration.
