What is Source Runner?

Source Runner (sr) is a command-line utility that executes code across 16 runtimes without manual setup. It declares the runtime and dependencies within a comment block at the start of a file, allowing the sr command to install the correct runtime version and dependencies into a cache for each script. This removes the need for virtualenv, requirements.txt, and node_modules. Python scripts follow PEP 723 metadata standards, making them valid uv scripts.

For JavaScript or TypeScript projects, the sr dev or sr run <script> commands execute package.json scripts. Source Runner sets up Node or Bun and your project's package manager, avoiding reinstallation when no changes are made. Other features include editor setup, global command installation, and build production for native binaries or bundles in runtimes with a compiler or bundler. It supports .env layering and private package feeds.

Source Runner supports Node.js, Deno, Bun, Python, Ruby, Julia, Go, Haskell, Dart, Bash, Zsh, Fish, Nushell, Dash, PowerShell 7+ and Windows PowerShell 5.1. It is free for personal use, but commercial use requires a paid license. It is available for macOS, Linux, and Windows as a single command-line binary.
