What is Smuxi?
Smuxi is an irssi-inspired, flexible, user-friendly and cross-platform IRC client for sophisticated users, targeting the GNOME desktop.
Smuxi is based on the client-server model: The core application (engine) can be placed onto a server which is connected to the Internet around-the-clock; one or more frontends then connect to the core. This way, the connection to IRC can be kept up even when all frontends have been closed. The combination of screen and irssi served as example for this architecture.
Smuxi also supports the regular single application mode. This behaves like a typical IRC client; it doesnt need separate core management and utilizes a local engine that is used by the local frontend client.

Comments and Reviews
It's a nice idea, but the GUI wastes so much screenspace that it was unusable for me. Quassel is very similar, but has a MUCH more efficient layout that is fully customizable, and wastes much less screen space. However, Quassel uses more RAM.
IRC works on it, but not XMPP. I could not make it connect to a Jabber server.
I like smuxi. It's easy to use and has common translations included. I have user experience on Windows and Linux with it and on both OS smuxi's working fine. If you like using IRC and twitter, I recommend you to taste it!
