What is Should I Move?

Should I Move is a free web app for people weighing up a relocation. You pick your current city, a destination and your salary, and it shows what that money is actually worth in the new place once local prices and taxes are taken into account.

Cost of living comparisons cover 325+ cities worldwide across 12 spending categories, including rent, groceries, restaurants, transport, utilities, healthcare and childcare. Prices are normalised into an index where New York City equals 100, so any two cities can be lined up on the same scale, and amounts are converted automatically with daily exchange rates.

On the salary side it calculates net take-home pay after income tax and social contributions using official tax brackets for 48 countries, and a savings-rate slider (0-50%) shows roughly how much you could put aside each month in each city, plus the difference between the two.

Results are instant, no sign-up is required to run a comparison, and the interface is available in 10 languages. Cost data is sourced from Numbeo, tax data from official government sources and the OECD, and currency rates from FloatRates.
